What is the Difference Between Sweepstakes and Contests 2024?

In this post i am going to tell you the Difference Between Sweepstakes and Contests 2024. The terms “Sweepstakes” and “Contests” are often used interchangeably, however, there is a big difference between the two.

What is a Sweepstakes & Giveaway?

Sweepstakes (also referred to as drawings, promotion, giveaways, etc…) involve determining a winner based on “the lucky draw”. Your odds in winning depend entirely upon how many other people have entered the sweepstakes, as well as how many entries you have submitted. A random drawing is conducted from all the entries received to choose the winner in a sweepstakes.

What is a Contest?

Contests, on the other hand, involve some sort of judging to determine the winner. Whether it be a poetry contest, drawing contest, creativity contest, design contest, baby photo contest, “name our new flavor of ice cream” contest, etc… they all involve the judging of entries to determine who ultimately receives the prize.

Quality of the entry, talent, and creativity are just a few criteria evaluated to determine the winner of contests. Sweepstakes, Giveaways, in contrast, are won on the basis of pure chance.

Some prize winning opportunities are a combination of both a sweepstakes and a contest.

A prime example of this type of situation is when you must answer a trivia question or solve a problem, and a winner is drawn from all the correct entries. The first part of this is similar to a contest, since you are judged on your knowledge by how well you answer the question. The second part is purely a sweepstakes (i.e. a random drawing from all the correct entries).

There are other times when it seems like you are entering a contest, but it is really just a sweepstakes with an added “step”. You may be asked, for instance, to describe “a creative way you use xyz product” as part of your sweepstakes entry. This “could” be a contest, if the company is awarding the prize to the entrant with the most creative answer and they are judging every entry. On the other hand, they could be including this extra step simply as a way to get you to stop, take a moment, and think a little deeper about their particular product.

Conclusion

Most of the time, the official rules will tell you exactly how the winner is determined. If the term “random drawing from all entries” appears, you are most likely entering a sweepstakes. If the rules mention the “judging of entries”, it is more likely to be a contest.
